Carpineto Chianti Classico, Tuscany, 1998.
News Flash, Tuscany has had two really good vintages in a row! 1997 and 1998 appear to be the two best back to back vintages I can remember in over a decade. The cool thing is most are being released right now and in the future, we have not missed it, and it gets better! The reserve wine will be out in a few more years. You should still find many good 97′ Chiantis in the market, but here is one of the great, and early, 98′ Chianti Classicos.
Carpinetos 98′ Chianti Classico color is deep and brooding with aromas of black cherries, raisened fruit and red licorice. On the palate it exhibits bright red currant, raspberry and cranberry fruit with a richness not seen in many Chianti Classicos. The flavors are forward and modern with plenty of fruit to please most traditional wine drinkers. This Tuscan red finishes medium-long and very pleasant. Enjoy this at $16 – CG
