Altos las Hormigas Malbec, Argentina, 1999
As you may know I am in the wine business in Seattle and this week I asked several of my favorite wine retailers to give me the best under $10 wine they can find. Both Ruth and David at Arista Cellars and Marshall Gill of Larry’s Market suggested the same wine. I have had the last two vintages of this wine and have liked them so I obliged and purchased a bottle. I’m glad I did.
This is the Best under $10 wine I have tasted recently. It is very dark in color with aromas of candied black cherry, roasted meat, and licorice. On the palate, a touch of tannin gives a backbone to its opulent black cherry fruit, plum, dark chocolate and oak. It is just drinking great right now, and would go well with strong flavored meats and cheeses. I would recommend buying a case or two and drinking it over the next two or three years. It will certainly age beautifully. $9 – CG
